JAN 2016: Changed from bag-in-box packaging to resealable bag packaging for MorningStar Farms®
COMPARED WITH OUR PREVIOUS PACKAGING, OUR FLEXIBLE BAGS OFFER BETTER FREEZER MANAGEMENT AND RE-SEALABLE FOOD STORAGE TO HELP PREVENT FOOD WASTE
Flexible bag takes up less space.
Resealable closure helps fight freezer burn.
Bag can be made smaller as you eat the food.
Plus, this change reduced MorningStar Farms® product and display case packaging material weight by an average of 38% less than previous packaging.
Research shows that material weight reduction is an effective way to help decrease environmental impacts of packaging, especially when comparing flexible packaging with bag-in-box packaging. That’s because less weight often results in lower energy use, less natural resource consumption and a smaller carbon footprint along the journey of the package.(1,2,3)
JOURNEY OF PACKAGE
WASTE TO LANDFILL
There can be less environmental impact for reduced-weight packaging at the Waste to Landfill stage even if the lower weight package is not recyclable, because, unfortunately, only 34% of Americans recycle.(4) Of course, beyond reducing material weight in our packaging, if we could also ensure recyclability at the end of the package journey, we could secure even greater environmental benefits and that is the future that Morningstar Farms® is working towards.
FUTURE: Continuously work towards more sustainable packaging through partnering with industry groups and packaging manufacturers.
As we look to the future, MorningStar Farms® is committed to using even more sustainable packaging. We are partnering with organizations like the Sustainable Packaging Coalition to stay on the cutting edge of discovery for more Earth-friendly and consumer-preferred packaging solutions like resealable, recyclable bags that work for our veggie foods.
